7 Days Rwanda Gorilla & Chimpanzee Trekking Tour

A 7-day Rwanda gorilla and chimpanzee trekking tour offers a thrilling adventure through Rwanda’s lush landscapes, allowing you to witness the incredible biodiversity of the country.

Day 1: Airport Pickup in Kigali

Upon your arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly greeted by our Njia African Adventure driver. Depending on Flight your arrival time, you may have a brief tour of Kigali, known as one of Africa’s cleanest and fastest-growing cities in Africa

Day 2: Depart Kigali to Nyungwe National Park

After breakfast, The driver will pick you up at 7 am, and you’ll depart for Nyungwe Forest National Park, located in the southwest of Rwanda. En route, will have a stopover at ethnographic museum in Huye district, known for its collection showcasing Rwanda’s rich cultural history and way of life.

Day 3: Nyungwe National Park Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk

After an early morning breakfast, you’ll be transferred to the ranger station at Gisakura for a chimpanzee trekking briefing before heading for an amazing chimpanzee experience. Nyungwe Forest is home to around 500 chimpanzees, with two habituated groups for trekking. After a rewarding chimpanzee encounter, return to the lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, head to the park’s headquarters in Uwinka for a thrilling canopy walk. Suspended 60 meters above the forest floor, the canopy walkway offers breathtaking views and a chance to spot monkeys at eye level.

Day 4: Nature Walk in Nyungwe and drive to Lake Kivu in Kibuye

After breakfast, head for a 3 hour scenic nature walk in Nyungwe Forest National Park. Explore the diverse wildlife, endemic birds, lush plant life, waterfalls, and stunning forest views. After the hike, depart for Kibuye, located on the shores of Lake Kivu. C

Check in to your hotel and relax by the lake.

Day 5: Boat Excursion on Lake Kivu and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Start your day with an early boat ride on Lake Kivu, exploring its beautiful scenery and visiting some of its islands. You may spot bats and various bird species during this excursion. Afterward, check out and depart for Volcanoes National Park in the north of Rwanda.

Situated in the far northwest of Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range – home of the endangered mountain gorilla and a rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath. Volcanoes National Park is named after the chain of dormant volcanoes making up the Virunga Massif: Karisimbi – the highest at 4,507m, Bisoke with its verdant Crater Lake, Sabinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura. Tracking endangered Mountain Gorillas with Njia African Adventures through the mysterious intimacy of the rain forest, alive with the calls of 200 species of colorful birds and chattering of the rare Golden Monkeys, is only one of the truly unique experiences in the area.

Volcanoes National Park is also home to Buhanga Eco-Park, an ancient forest holding Rwanda’s most intriguing folklore and Musanze Caves, formed 62 million years ago after the last estimated volcanic eruption.

Day 6: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Rise early and have breakfast before heading to the park office at 7 am. You will receive a briefing and be assigned to a gorilla group for tracking in Volcanoes National Park. Trekking can take several hours, so pack a lunch. Once you find the gorillas, spend one awe-inspiring hour observing them.

Volcanoes National Park is home to over 400 mountain gorillas, with ten habituated families available for trekking.

After the trek your driver will lead you back to your Lodge with memories of a lifetime and spend the rest of the day relaxed and chilled at your lodge.

Day 7: Golden Monkey Trekking and Return to Kigali

Depending on your flight schedule, you may embark on another trek in Volcanoes National Park, this time to see the enchanting golden monkeys in the bamboo forest area, a relatively easy trek as the monkeys are usually found in the lower slopes of the mountains.

After the trek, you’ll return to Kigali for your departure.
