9 Days Kapchorwa, Pian Upe & Karamoja Adventure

Welcome to the 9 Days Kapchorwa, Pian Upe & Karamoja Adventure – an immersive journey through the untamed beauty and cultural richness of Uganda. Over the next nine days, you will embark on a thrilling exploration of Kapchorwa’s majestic landscapes, delve into the untouched wilderness of Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve, and immerse yourself in the vibrant traditions of the Karamojong people.

Day 1:  Depart Entebbe for Jinja

Our Driver will pick you up from your address in Kampala or Entebbe. We will head East to the Adventure Capital of Jinja Situated on the northern shores of Africa’s largest lake, in southern Uganda, Jinja is the second largest city in Uganda and is famous for being located at the source of the Nile. The rapids on the Nile make Jinja the white water rafting capital of East Africa. It is also known as the adventure capital of Uganda. While the main attraction is undoubtedly rafting down the Nile, there are also a variety of other adrenaline filled activities such as: quad biking, bungee jumping, kayaking, and mountain biking and horse riding. Other popular activities include: browsing the colorful Jinja market, viewing the faded grandeur of the crumbling colonial architecture lining the streets and joining a bicycle tour to soak up the spectacularly scenic surrounds.

Day 2: Depart Jinja for Kapchorwa (Mount Elgon)

After breakfast we’ll drive to Kapchorwa, arriving for lunch.  3 hour cultural walk Sipi Hike in the afternoon Situated along the border of Uganda and Kenya, Mount Elgon is the oldest and largest solitary volcano in East Africa and has one of largest intact calderas in the world.

This extinct shield volcano is split by the Uganda/Kenya Border with a Mount Elgon National Park in both countries. It measures an impressive 80 kilometres in diameter and rises over 3000 metres above sea level. Mount Elgon is home to a variety of rare plants and abundant wildlife. The area also offers excellent climbing and walking along Koitobos, the highest peak on the Kenya side, reaching up to 4200 metres.

Day 3: Kapchorwa to Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve.

A day nature hike in Mount Elgon NP. After the hike we’ll head down from Mt. Elgon to the Karamoja plains and Pian Upe Game Reserve located in the northeastern reaches of Uganda, the Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve is set on a stretch of semi-arid land covering an area of over 2500 square kilometres. It is the largest wildlife reserve in the country and the second-largest protected area in Uganda, after the Murchison Falls National Park, which is one of the most beautiful natural attractions in the country. Visitors can view the spectacular peaks of Mount Kadam, learn about the local Karamaja cultures, and spot an array of wildlife, including cheetah, leopard, lions, spotted hyena, buffalo, greater kudu, eland, topi, oribi, dik-dik, and the last of Uganda’s roam antelope.

Day 4: Explore Pian Upe Game reserve

A day exploring  Wildlife Reserve and conservation area in the Karamoja sub region of northeastern Uganda and overnight at the Pian Upe Uganda Wildlife Authority Bandas.

Day 5: Mount Kadam Hike

After Breakfast setoff for the day exploring Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve hiking the Mount Kadam, The Mount expeditions are a mix of rich encounters with the Uganda’s highland people, breathtaking views and unique sights along the trails and unique campsites where you can enjoy the sunset, the stars and sunrise over the planes of Karamoja, together with Njia driver Guide walk on a murram road to the trail head (3 km), or organise transportation. Once off the murram, you hike through lush green fields until you reach the foothills and the forest of Kadam. The ascent is steep, following narrow but well-defined trails that pass through local settlements. The final ascent to the campground is steep and requires a little bit of climbing, but ropes or climbing gear is not necessary. Leave the heaviest part of your luggage (tent, etc.) and continue following the trail through the jungle.

At this point, the trail will flatten out for 6 kilometres, before you start on the second ascent to the top of Kadam (3,063 m). Those who like simple rock climbing will love this part, as you scramble up rocks with nice handholds. Again, no ropes or special gear required.

Follow the trail up the ridge through tall bushes to reach the flat summit. Take photos of the staggeringly beautiful mountains, before turning around and heading back down the same way you came up.

Camp overnight in the mountains, spend your night stargazing and wake up to one of the most spectacular views we have ever seen.

Day 6-7: Depart Pian Upe for Moroto

In the morning we’ll drive to Moroto a district set in the Northern Region of Uganda. At the foot of the 3,083 meter high Mount Moroto. The town is known for its cultural tourism, natural surrounding scenery. And abundant wildlife that Visitors can explore with views of Mount Moroto and through surrounding forest reserves of Pian-Upe, Bokora, and Matheniko. Which protect a variety of habitats. The drive will be through the dry montane forest and dry savanna inhabited by an array of species. Including 220 bird species, a collection of monkey and wild cat species. And many more. Through a network of scenic trails traversing the area, You will learn about the way of life of the nomadic Karamojong people, and browse a variety of traditional crafts and souvenirs. Other commonly spotted species in the area include hyenas, buffalos, dik-dik, and the Greater and Lesser Kudus.

Day 8-9: Karamoja Cultural Experience

The adventure concludes in the captivating region of Karamoja, where age-old traditions and a nomadic way of life persist. Marvel at the dramatic landscapes of Kidepo Valley National Park, and embark on cultural encounters with the Karamojong people. Experience their traditional dances, engage in meaningful interactions, and gain insights into a lifestyle that harmonizes with the land.
